Only Irish citizens aged 18 or over and resident in Ireland may vote in constitutional referendums. You can check the electoral register online at http://www.checktheregister.ie/ or in your local Library. If you are entitled to vote but not already registered to vote, you can register via your local county council.

Before every referendum, a Referendum Commission is established. Its main role is to explain the subject matter of referendum proposals, promote awareness of the referendum and encourage people to turn out and vote. See the Referendum Commission website for the Referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon at http://www.lisbontreaty2009.ie/. Voting gives you an opportunity to be part of decision-making that affects your life – if you don’t vote; others will make the decisions for you!
