Almost 5% of EU milk comes from Ireland

New Eurostat figures show that the Irish dairy herd grew by 4.5% in 2016 following the removal of milk quotas on 1 April 2015. This was the third largest rise in the EU after Cyprus (+8.7 %) and Luxembourg (+5.8 %). Irish milk production also grew, by 4% in 2016, second largest rise after the Netherlands (+5.9 %). The EU as a whole however only recorded a slight increase (+0.2 %) with production falling in 12 member states. Ireland accounted for 4.5% of EU milk production in 2016, joint 7th highest (with Spain). Germany (20.9%) and France (16%) were the EU’s largest milk producers.
