Denis McGeady EDIC Gaoth Dobhair on Europe Day: Radio na Gaeltachta

Denis McGeady from EDIC Gaoth Dobhair was interviewed on Europe Day 9th May by Radio na Gaeltachta. This was for the Barrscealta topical & current affairs magazine programme. In this interview by Áine Ní Churráin, Denis spoke about Europe Day and its origins with Robert Schuman.  Denis explained how Europe Day is held on 9 May every year to celebrate peace and unity in Europe and how this date marks the anniversary of the historical ‘Schuman Declaration’.

At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable. His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

Denis then went on to talk about EDICs in general & EDIC Donegal & Gaeltacht in particular and the EU information and services this initiative brings to the people of the area.
