EU Plastics Strategy: a vision of what we want the plastics economy to look like by 2030

Speaking about the new EU Plastics Strategy at a Coastwatch Ireland event this week, Gerry Kiely, Head of the Commission Representation in Ireland said: “As things stand, the way most plastics are produced, used and discarded in the EU fails to capture the economic benefits a more circular approach would bring. For example, according to estimates, only 5% of the value of plastic packaging material remains in the economy after one very short single use. The rest goes directly to waste. The annual bill for that 95% of wasted plastic packaging amounts to up to €105 billion. That is quite clearly a wasted opportunity.”
