In order to encourage debate and discussion among young people on the topic of climate change, Mountmellick Europe Direct are delighted to welcome respected climatologist, academic and environmentalist Professor John Sweeney to Mountmellick Library on February 2nd at 10.30am. Following the historic Paris Agreement on Climate Change which came into effect on December 12th 2015, Climate Change has come to the forefront of discussion both in Europe and internationally. Climate Change is now recognized as the most serious and threatening global environmental problem we have ever faced.

Professor John Sweeney has been an academic at the Geography Department at NUI Maynooth since 1978. In the 30 years since, Professor Sweeney has taught courses primarily related to climatology, biogeography, geomorphology and environmental resource management. Having published up to 60 scientific papers and editing/co-authoring 4 texts on the various aspects of climatology and climate change in Ireland, in addition to his involvement in the course design and curriculum developments at both second and third levels, John remains one of the foremost academics in his field. Professor Sweeney contributed to the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. The former president of An Taisce, the National Trust of Ireland, Professor Sweeney currently leads a number of nationally funded research projects examining various aspects of climate change in Ireland.

Located at Mountmellick Library, Mountmellick Europe Direct was established in 2012. Part of a network of 10 local, accessible information centre’s located around Ireland. Europe Direct acts as an information access point for the public, helping to stimulate debate of European issues at local level. On Tuesday February 2nd Professor John Sweeney will be presenting the students of Mountmellick Community School the facts of climate change, the impact of this change on Ireland and the role we can each play to combat our greatest environmental issue.
