EDIC Donegal and Gaeltacht: Regional Soapbox Final

Event Description

The regional Final of Europe Direct Information Centre’s Soapbox Debate took place in Central Library on Thursday October 13th with a total of 17 speakers taking part. The Motion for debate this year was ‘The EU: United in Diversity’ Master of Ceremonies for the evening was broadcaster and journalist Charlie Collins and judges were Matt Carthy MEP; Caitlín Uí Chochlainn, Comhordaitheoir Gaeilge, DCC; Deirdre Hines writer & poet & Andrew Galvin, actor, poet and past winner.

Judges all agreed that the speaking was of a very high standard, so high that it was decided to award extra 3rd prizes in both categories with 2 under 18s tying for 3rd place.

This Soapbox event is always a very enjoyable evening. Matt Carthy MEP spoke of the importance of these types of events which encourage public speaking and active citizenship and he urged all to enter again next year. He even remarked that he may be quoting from some of the speeches in the EU Parliament. We wish the best of luck to the two first place winners, who will be going forward to the National Soapbox final in the National Concert Hall, Dublin in November.

Winners as follows:

Over 19: 1st place Guy Stephenson, 2nd Nell Cutliffe & 3rd Pat McCarthy.

Under 18: 1st place Laura Diver from the Keegan School of Speech & Drama, 2nd Jessica Duffy from Karen Murphy School of Speech & Drama & joint 3rd Conal Bonner (Keegan School) & Laura Foody ( Karen Murphy School).
