To celebrate Europe Day – 9th May 2017 – the Europe Direct Information Centre has organised a schools debate between a team from Sligo Grammar School and the Mercy College in the Council Chamber at 3pm sharp on Tuesday 9th May.

As County Sligo has been designated the European Volunteering Capital in 2017 by the European Volunteer Centre, the topic of debate is

“This House believes that volunteering does make a difference”

This prestigious title awarded to County Sligo recognizes the volunteering strategies and strengths of County Sligo and its volunteer community.

MEP Matt Carthy will also be in attendance and will talk to the students about ‘a day in the life of an MEP’ whilst the overall winner is being decided by the judges.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Hubert Keaney is going to start the event with the launch of a new special edition European Volunteer Centre Library card to mark the occasion and also welcome MEP Matt Carthy to the Sligo County Council offices. Mayor of Sligo Cllr Marie Casserly will be present for the Library card launch and will be on the Judging panel for the school debate.
