Event Description

The Europe Direct Information Centre (EDIC Sligo) – based in Sligo Library – is running a Secondary Schools debating competition on Europe Day (9th May) this year. We had our inaugural event last year where two schools, Sligo Grammar School and Mercy College Sligo, battled it out for the top prize in the Council Chamber of Sligo County Council. The two teams enjoyed the occasion and met with local elected officials and MEP Matt Carthy.

We are building on the event this year with the participation of more secondary schools in the area that are involved in the EU Ambassador Schools programme. We will have a junior and senior competition this year with prizes for both winner and runner-up teams in both categories. An MEP from our electoral area will be invited to talk to the assembled audience during this event.

Seeing as 2018 is the year of European Cultural heritage #EuropeForCulture our debate argument isThis house believes that state funding of the arts & heritage is essential to a civilised society.’
