Event Description

Dr. Donal Hall will give a lecture on the above on Thursday 25th September @ 6.30pm.

“By the summer of 1914, Ireland teetered on the edge of Civil War. With the passing of the Home Rule Bill, Nationalist and Loyalist militias were arming to fight for or against implementation while the British Government desperately sought a compromise. Dundalk with its major army base and traditional support for Ulster Nationalists, was likely to be deeply involved in any conflict. Instead when no one was looking, the world was plunged into a world war taking Ireland and Britain with it. This lecture will examine how the people of Dundalk reacted to the events of 1914 which were to trigger a decade of cataclysmic change at home and abroad.”
