NEARfm programme looks at “What is Irish Culture?”

Europe on Air, NEAR90.3fm, Thursdays, 4.30-5.00pm

Europe on Air NEARfm’s live weekly programme examines the impact the EU can have on the lives of the Irish and European identity.

Programme 15 of the series takes place at 4.30pm on Thursday 12th June 2014.  The title of this programme is “What is Irish Culture” and it will look at aspects of Irish culture that make it uniquely Irish.  Special guests will include Katie Lowry of Creative Europe Desk Ireland, Mark O’Brien, Acting Director, axis: Ballymun and Jim Carroll, Irish Times music journalist, blogger and host of the Banter discussions.

Paul Loughran, NEARfm’s Production Coordinator and chair for this week’s programme states “Irish culture is known throughout the world, from traditional music and St Patrick’s Day to the role of the pub in our social lives and Irish literature. I am looking forward to today’s program where we will discuss what constitutes Irish and European culture and if more recognition is needed from the Irish Government and the EU as to what artistically makes our culture stand out.”

Issues discussed will include Irish literature, music and the arts, cultural diversity, customs, traditions and folklore, sport and the GAA, food, drink and pub culture, and how the diaspora spreads Irish traditions worldwide. The discussion will also look at European culture, the common heritage that is shared by European countries and why cultural projects are funded by the EU.

Europe on Air was launched by Paschal Donohoe, TD and Minister for European Affairs as part of Craol’s media literacy conference on Saturday March 29th 2014.

This radio series will also be broadcast on 15 community radio stations throughout Ireland. Further information on other stations can be obtained from the Craol website: This project is funded under the Europe for Citizen Project Education, Audiovisual & Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).
