Event Description

On Friday 2 December, Prof Fiona Doohan from the School of Biology and Environmental Science, in the College of Life Sciences, UCD, Dublin, gave a presentation on her research into sustainable disease control in food crops to to members of the general public in Letterkenny.

Many members of the audience were teachers and students from LYIT who were interested in funding for further study in this field.

Fiona’s department in UCD is funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme for Research & Development. Fiona gave a presentation on the funding she and all Horizon 2020 researchers receive as well as highlighting the social aspects of being a part of the large Horizon 2020 team.

She  also outlined her own work in the field of research into plant diseases and sustainable disease control with special emphasis on the fact that there is incomplete & low take up of available EU funding. This is important funding as crop diseases continually mutate as new strains are conquered through research.

The EDIC received follow up queries from people who were not able to attend on the night and these were forwarded to Prof Doohan.
