Event Description

Europe Direct Information Centre Letterkenny & Polish School Letterkenny presented a very successful Polish Cultural evening with music by ‘The Hazels’ Polish school folk group, poetry by world renowned poet Wistawa Szmborska & traditional Polish pastries made by the local Polish community.  This event is part of Polska Éire 2015 festival.

The evening started with a presentation by EDIC manager Helen McNutt on the work of EDICs in general and the EU policy of mobility and the embracing of all cultures under the European Union umbrella.

This was followed by Kasia Hordyniec presenting the work of Polish poet Laureate Wislawa Szymborska. Kasia also gave a short presentation of her life. This was followed by reading of her poetry by the children who attend the Polish school in Letterkenny. We also had wonderful music from The Hazels Polish folk group with Polish members of the audience joining in the singing. Polish home made pastries were provided and enjoyed by the audience.

This event is a collaboration between two EU member states to encourage mobility and  integration by presenting a cultural programme from Poland to increase the local Donegal community’s knowledge of Polish culture.

The event was so successful that we are planning further such events with children from local schools.
