Event Description

The current refugee crisis in the Mediterranean plus EU efforts to relocate these refugees has stimulated interest in this subject locally, especially since Ireland has agreed to accept a further 600 refugees over the next two years, mainly from Syria and Eritrea.

For World Refugee Day EDIC Donegal & Gaeltacht purchased new titles to add to the stock available to highlight World Refugee Day. We collated an exhibition of books on this subject for adults and children and provided recommended reading lists supplied by UNHCR. We also took part in the UNHCR Ireland’s Library Campaign to mark World Refugee Day on June 20th & on this day made a presentation on the present crisis and EU response, to library users at the exhibition launch. 25 people attended this launch and presentation and 2076 library users overall visited the display.

This was a colourful and dynamic display with books drawn from both fiction and non-fiction. Most of the books were issued over the course of the week and the display had to be refreshed on a daily basis. The free bookmarks supplied by UNHCR were an added attraction and went fast as bookmarks always do.

This launch & exhibition provided valuable information to the public on both the present crisis and EU efforts to address it as well as the wider on-going issue of refugees.
