Event Description

A large crowd from as far apart as Carraroe and Ballinasloe including a strong
and youthful Galway City contingent descended on Westside Library, Galway,
for the regional heats of the Europe Direct Soapbox 2014, generously sponsored by the European Commission in Ireland.

MC Ollie Turner of Galway Bay FM kept the show moving with his natural wit and the standard of speakers, some as young as first year students from St. Mary’s College Galway was particularly high.

Ballinasloe was well represented on the night with both the adult and under 19
category winners hailing from the area.  Bryan Mulry of Garbally College gave
an accomplished performance to edge out Stacey Ní Ghriofa of Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin in Carraroe in the under 19s while Siobhan Fitzgerald
of Ahascragh was equally polished to win the senior competition.

As well as winning iPads for their efforts, both contestants travelled to
Dublin on Wednesday to take part in the National Soapbox Final at Farmleigh
House in front of a large audience including their very enthusiastic
supporters from Garbally College and Eglish National School.  First prize in
each of the final categories was €1,000 and a trip to Brussels!  Siobhan did us proud as she took the honours in the senior category.
