International Women’s Day – New report on Gender Equality

Only marginal progress has been made in recent years towards achieving gender equality according to a new EU report published to mark International Women’s Day. Progress has stalled in certain areas: women still take on the majority of caring responsibilities in families, the gender pay gap has stagnated at 16% (14% in Ireland) and violence against women remains a problem. Women continue to be under-represented in decision-making roles accounting for only 29% (22% in Ireland) of membership of the lower houses of parliament and only 25% (17.6% in Ireland) of the boards of the largest listed companies. High childcare costs remain an issue. The report mentions Ireland where childcare-related costs represent 33% of disposable income for a couple with children with median earnings.
