Ireland and the EU fishing fleet

New Eurostat figures show that, in 2016, Ireland’s fish catches amounted to 230,000 tonnes (up from 205,000 in 2008) or 4.6% of the total EU catch. The highest fish catches were recorded in Spain (17.2%), the UK (14%) and Denmark (13.4%). The figures also show that the number of Irish fishing vessels has increased, from 2,022 in 2008 to 2,117 in 2016. In total there were almost 84,000 fishing vessels in the EU in 2016 with Greece (18.1%) and Italy (14.7%) accounting for the highest shares.
