Ireland behind on its Europe 2020 targets for renewable energy

Ireland is lagging behind on reaching its Europe 2020 target of 16% of renewables in energy consumption according to a new report from Eurostat. In 2016, only 9.5% of our energy came from renewables which was well below the 2020 target of 16%. We also have a long way to go to meet our targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020. On the other hand, Ireland has surpassed its targets for employment (73% of 20-64 year olds were employed in 2017 compared to a target of 69%). The share of early school leavers (5% in 2017) is also well below the initial target of 8%.
