Ireland records highest natural rise in population in the EU

Ireland saw the 4th highest relative rise in population in the EU in 2017 with an increase of 11.2 per 1,000 inhabitants or just under 54,000 extra people. Only Malta (+32.9‰), Luxembourg (+19.0‰) and Sweden (+12.4‰) recorded higher increases. Ireland also had the highest natural rise in its population in 2017, with the number of births more than double the number of deaths (+6.6 per 1,000 population). This was thanks to Ireland having the highest birth rate (12.9 per 1,000 residents) in the EU in 2017 and the lowest death rate (6.3 per 1,000 inhabitants). Ireland with a total population of 4.838 million now accounts for 0.9% of the EU total population of almost 513 million.
