Share of Irish children in formal childcare below EU average

One in three (33%) Irish children aged 12 or under receive formal childcare, of which 19% pay a full or reduced cost and 14% get it cost free. This compares to an EU average of 39% of which 29% pay. Denmark (86%) had the highest share of children receiving formal childcare (paid and cost free) while the UK (37%) had the highest share who receive it cost free. The Eurostat figures also show that, for 38% of Irish households, cost is the main reason for not making use of formal childcare services. However, over half (53%) say that they do not need it.
