Soapbox 2017 at Ballinasloe Library

Ballinasloe EDIC once again hosted this years Soapbox Competition on Friday, 29th September. One of the first regional finals of the competition, 22 competitors took part in total, speaking on the theme of ‘Brexit: Ireland’s Opportunity?’.

With 19 speakers in the ’18 and Under’ category, competition was tight and the quality high. Representatives of An CeathrĂș Rua, St. Enda’s, Ard Scoil Mhuire, and Scoil Bhride took part, with impassioned speeches both for and against the motion. Ultimately, St. Enda’s student Juliette O’Donnell was selected as the category winner.

For the ’19 and Overs’, 3 speakers took part and Michael Keenan emerged victorious. No stranger to the Soapbox format, Michael had previously won in the region last year. Both winners received iPad Minis as their prizes and will progress to compete in the competition at the national stage.
